On August 25, 2010, the Pike County Commissioners once again honored the United Way of Pike County by signing a Proclamation showing their support for its community-wide event, the Day of Caring.  This is a day which has two large goals – 1) many human service agencies will receive help readying their organizations for Fall thanks to the efforts of over 300 county citizens and 2) a Blood Drive memorializing 9/11 takes place to support and strengthen the Red Cross supply.  “The Day of Caring is a selfless day, one which the United Way is so pleased to have created and perpetuated.  We would not succeed without the support of the community and we are so pleased that the Commissioners continue to support this with the Proclamation,” said UWPC Vice President, John Gilpin.

“We have such great support from the Pike County students, but would love to see more adults involved,” said Sue Robbins, UWPC Day of Caring Co-Chair. “It’s never too late to participate in this day!”  The 10th Annual Day of Caring and 8th Annual 9-11 Memorial Blood Drive is on September 11th at the Delaware Valley Middle School Gymnasium.   Details about the day and the application form can be found on the United Way website,

United Way of Pike County Day of Caring Holds 8th Annual 9/11 Memorial Blood Drive September 11

Pictured: L-R – Gregory Myer of Myer & Myer, CPA and Scott Myer, United Way Treasurer, sample the ice cream cones they will be giving as thank you treats to blood donors.

This is the eighth year that the United Way has teamed with the American Red Cross and the Pike County Chamber of Commerce for the 9/11 Memorial Blood Drive.  This year’s Blood Drive actually falls on 9/11 so with special remembrance on this anniversary, the organizations are hoping for a big turnout.  The American Red Cross is the single largest supplier of blood products to hospitals throughout the United States.  Needless to say, it is a challenge to have the supply meet the demand.   The goal for this Blood Drive is 95 units, each unit potentially saving three lives.  We know Pike County can achieve this!

September 11th is the United Way of Pike County’s Annual Day of Caring.  On that day many are out and about helping the community.  Think about it!  Whether or not you are one of the many directly assisting one of the many human service agencies with their Fall clean-up, you can still volunteer to give blood and save three lives as a consequence. Now that’s a day well spent!  The only requirements are you must be 17 years of age or older, weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good health, and have identification with you.

As a special thank you for being a donor, Scott Myer of Myer & Myer, CPA and a United Way Board member, will be giving free ice cream cones to all participants. “I’m happy to provide one of my favorite treats to all who take the time to come to our Blood Drive and donate.  It’s amazing to think that, in a short, painless span of time, you can save three lives.  We are always pleased to partner with the Red Cross in this effort.  I just hope to give away EVERY last bit of ice cream,” exclaimed Scott.

The United Way Day of Caring will begin at 7:45 am with registration and a big breakfast in the Delaware Valley 9-10 cafeteria. Breakfast and tee shirts for volunteers have been generously donated by the Dime Bank and the Pike County Light & Power Company. Volunteers will then travel to local Human Service agencies to complete projects. Lunch will be provided at each agency.  Transportation will be provided by Delaware Valley School District. The workday will end at 3 pm. Please register in advance by visiting the United Way web site.
www.unitedwaypike.org.

The Blood Drive hours will be 8:45 am to 2:45 pm at the Delaware Valley School District Middle School gymnasium.  Walk-Ins are welcome. If you would like to make an appointment, contact Catherine Capasso at 570-296-9980. For further information about the Blood Drive or The Day of Caring visit the UW website at

ViaMedia Gets the Word Out About United Way!
ViaMedia and UWPC Representatives Holding UWPC Banner
Pictured: l-r John Gilpin, United Way Board Member, Bill Cohen, Viamedia Senior Account Executive and United Way Advisory Board Member, and Scott Meyer, United Way Board Member.

The United Way was started in Pike County many years ago.  One of the first people to recognize a need for such an organization here is Bill Cohen.  Since those early years, he has never stopped supporting and championing the United Way of Pike County.  Bill was Campaign Chairman for three years for the UWPC and even today continues to be a member of the UWPC’s Advisory Board.  For all the years of Bill’s involvement with the United Way of Pike County, he has, as Senior Account Executive for Viamedia, offered generously the gift of advertising in kind for the United Way on our local cable networks.  Viamedia is a marketing company which specializes in building equity positions through television advertising for its clients.  Bill believes strongly “in giving back to the community we serve.  Cable TV Advertising is the best way to inform the public about the United Way of Pike County and its impact in our community.”

“There is no more immediate way to spread the message of United Way, to advertise our events, and to focus on the County’s human service agencies than by using the cable media.  Bill and Viamedia provide an invaluable contribution to the UWPC’s success. We thank him for his continued loyalty,” said Tom Regenski, President of the United Way Board.

For more information about Viamedia, visit its website at www.viamediatv.com.  The United Way’s community event, The Day of Caring, is September 11. The opportunity to taste the best of the chefs, Chefs United, is on October 21st.  For more information about the United Way of Pike County or any of its events visit

United Way is on the Move!
United Way Office Holding the UWPC Banner
Pictured: L-R – Mike Donlon, UWPC Board Member, Joey Hunt, Drew Corry, and Brandon Angradi , and Sue Robbins, UWPC Board Member are all smiles in front of the United Way’s new home!

After 3 years on West George Street, the United Way of Pike County has moved downtown!  On a hot, sticky day in August, the United Way opened its new doors in the Historic Schoolhouse Building on Harford Street.  Thanks to the valiant efforts of Mike Donlon, Sue Robbins and their band of sturdy young men,  boxes and equipment were loaded in, unpacked, organized, and, by day’s end, United Way was up and running.  “We had a wonderful space on West George Street and are so grateful to Pike County Commissioners Caridi, Wagner and Forbes for their generosity.  Our new location, in this former schoolhouse which holds so many memories for residents, is larger and so conveniently located.  I’m really pleased with the whole look of this new office space and hope any and every one will stop by and visit us! Nothing has changed about what we do, just where we do it!” said Catherine Capasso, Executive Director of the United Way.

The United Way is currently in full swing organizing the upcoming Day of Caring and 9/11 Annual Blood Drive, both to be held September 11, 2010.  The next fundraiser, Chefs’ United Signature Event, will be held at the Inn at Woodloch, October 21.  This is a fun way to sample the best of the chefs in our area! For more information about how to be a part of these community events, please visit the United Way of Pike County website at

Pike County Light & Power Company Gives to the Day of Caring
Holding a Large Check and a Day of Caring Poster.
Pictured: L-R  Barry Short, Manager of Public Affairs for Pike County Power and Light, John Gilpin, United Way Board Member, and Sue Robbins, United Way Board Member and Co-Chair of the Day of Caring.

Pike County Power & Light and Power Company has made a significant donation to the   United Way of Pike County’s Annual Day of Caring to be held on Saturday, September 11th.  The day begins with a “breakfast for champions” at 7:45 at the Delaware Valley 9-10 campus to help all the volunteers get ready for a busy day of working for our community.  Every volunteer receives a Day of Caring tee shirt. You will see them all around the County!

“Pike County citizens really stand out on a day such as this!  It’s an extraordinary experience to see so many helping our non-profits which serve so many in are community who are in need of the services they offer.  We thank the Pike County Light & Power Company for financially supporting this event.  Without the support, we could not make this day such a positive experience for all involved and produce such incredible results for our human service agencies,” said Sue Robbins, Day of Caring Co-Chairperson.

Barry Short, Manager of Public Affairs for Pike County Light & Power, believes strongly that the “human service agencies that the United Way supports enhance and enrich a healthy community.  The agencies prove every day through their countless acts of kindness, counsel, and support that Pike County’s people are compassionate, caring, and concerned.  It’s just smart business for Pike County Light & Power to be a leading donor to United Way’s Day of Caring because our business relies on a strong and vibrant community! We know that the contributions to United Way go directly to the people of Pike County.  The money doesn’t come from anywhere else: no entitlements, no government grants, just people and organizations like us who believe in taking care of their own and making Pike County a more attractive place to live, to work, and to raise a family.”

The 10th Annual Day of Caring and 8th Annual 9-11 Memorial Blood Drive is on September 11th at Delaware Valley Middle School Gymnasium.  It’s never too late to offer your help! Details about the day and the application form can be found on the United Way website, www.unitedwaypike.org, or call Catherine Capasso at the United Way office at 570-296-9980 or toll free 888-306-6963.  For further information about any of the agencies providing services in Pike County, visit the website www.PikePaHelp.org.  * Give *  * Advocate *  * Volunteer *  – Live United!

The United Way of Pike County Fund Raiser held this past Saturday was a huge success!  As promised, the CEREMONY at St. Patrick’s Hall and the RECEPTION at the Tom Quick Inn were filled with hysterical antics by the cast of characters, including the DIVA herself, SUGAR.

The CEREMONY started with a surprise Grand Entrance by the Red Hat Ladies of Pike County to Halva Nagila, followed by a Beautiful Ballet Performance by The Delaware Dance Company of Dingmans Ferry.  DJ Flow/Hot Trax, Ralph Codero, kept the music going for the traditional promenade of the bridal party; the singing of Gentile-ish vows; the sand ceremony; and the Jewish-ish vows, ending with a spectacular balloon drop.

The RECEPTION was generously donated and hosted by the owners of the Tom Quick Inn.  Guests raved about the abundant variety of culinary delectables prepared by Chef Josh. The music by the live vocal group the “DINETTES” was amazing. Everyone was kept in high gear and sung along to their favorite oldies and current hits. The cast of characters kept everyone entertained and interactive for fun and laughter the entire evening, while SUGAR wowed everyone with her fabulous wardrobe and jewelry changes.  The lucky 50/50 and many raffle winners left with wonderful prizes.

The United Way of Pike County would like to THANK the owners and staff of the Tom Quick Inn for hosting this event and all those who supported this event! The next fund raiser is Chef’s United to be held at the Inn at Woodloch on Thursday, September 23rd: 6pm cocktail hour followed by 7pm Benefit Dinner with Chefs from some of the finest area restaurants and caterers “UNITING” to use their culinary talents to support the United Way of Pike County.  The proceeds are allocated to Pike County Human Service Agencies who in-turn support our friends and neighbors in need. The United Way of Pike County and the Lords Valley Rotary Club in partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Pike County created the revolving ramp fund several years ago to help people in need. The program is to provide a family in need with a ramp and give the family the ability to pay the fund back over time. The primary goal of this fund was to help families with disabilities and/or elderly in need of a ramp to continue to live an active lifestyle.

The dedicated volunteers of the Pike County Habitat for Humanity built this 32-foot ramp for John and Janet Flaherty of Birchwood Lakes in Dingmans Ferry. “Having a ramp can be such a blessing to families, it allows them the freedom to get out and be active while ensuring their safety and security when accessing their home.  I am proud to be part of two organizations that are committed to giving back to the community and enriching the lives of others.” Stated Mike Donlon, UWPC Board Member and Habitat for Humanity Volunteer.

Do You Need Help?  PikePaHelp.org Helps Connect Community Residents to Needed Services

Because of the poor economy over the past couple of years, there has been a significant increase in the number of people needing assistance just to survive.  An increased number of people are facing foreclosures and are in danger of losing their homes, do not have enough food to eat, or have trouble paying for heat in the winter.  As if any of these situations are not stressful enough, people also do not know who to ask for help, and what services might be available to them. You could look in the local paper, phonebook or on the internet and just start calling around.

Although finding information about services in Pike County was not always easy, it is much easier now thanks to a program managed by the United Way of Pike County.
PikePaHelp.org is a FREE comprehensive on-line database of over 200 governments, nonprofit and not-for-profit organizations that provide human, health, public, community or other essential services, which are free, subsidized or not-for-profit. Search by category; for example, under the Human Service category are subcategories including support groups and housing.  Users can also search by keywords or phrases.  It’s easy to use!

Since not everyone has computer access, the United Way published a book of the online directory and distributed it to county and township administrative buildings, schools, libraries, churches, and many human service agencies.  Brochures entitled “Find Help Now” are also available throughout Pike County with a listing of some of the agencies included in the
PikePaHelp.org database.

The directory and brochure are posted in PDF format on the PikePaHelp.org and United Way of Pike County website at
www.unitedwaypike.org for anyone to download and print their own copy.  Support for this program was made possible by the United Way of Pike County, a Monroe/Pike Community Services Block Grant and the Pike County Human Services Development Fund.  For more information about the United Way of Pike County, any of its programs, or to make a donation, visit www.unitedwaypike.org, or call toll free 888-306-6963 or 570-296-9980.  “What Matters”, “Offering Hope – Building Futures” – LIVE UNITED!

United Way of Pike County is Accepting 2010 Applications

Download the 2010 Application for Funding and 2009 Progress Report

The United Way of Pike County would like to remind all Pike County Human Service agencies interested in applying for a 2010 United Way grant that the application deadline is March 31, 2010.  The application form can be found by visiting our website: unitedwaypike.org, clicking the “Allocations” link in the upper left corner, then by clicking on the “2010 Application for funding and 2009 Progress” link that appears in the middle of the page. Then just follow the instructions. It’s that easy! If you have any problems with navigation of the website or questions regarding the application process, please contact Catherine Capasso, Executive Director, United Way of Pike County at (570)296-9980.

The United Way of Pike County would like to thank all the community members, businesses, and organizations that have generously given to the United Way.  All funding is exclusively used within Pike County to benefit our local non-profit human service agencies.  These agencies serve our Pike County friends and neighbors in distressed situations.  With the downturn in the economy and so many residents facing financial hardship, support for these agencies is vital. Our friends and neighbors in need have increased in numbers just as state and federal funding has decreased.  We need your help now more than ever. If you would like to contribute to the United Way visit the website and click on the “Donations” link on the right side of the website or contact the office at 570-296-9980. Thank you for your continued support of the United Way of Pike County.
