It is this spirit of generosity and kindness that brings our community together and makes this time of the year so special.” said Christine Obser, President of the United Way. Christine also stated that the stockings would be donated to the Pike County “Toys for Tots” program. Once again, The United Way of Pike County thanks Citizens Bank for their kindness.

United Way Goal Thermometer: Mercury Rising!

More than ever given recent economic events, The United Way of Pike County continues to focus on improving the lives of others in our community. The mission of the United Way of Pike County is to help fund a variety of local human service agencies which directly affect the well being of Pike County residents in need.

Thanks to the continued generosity of our community, the United Way of Pike County is currently at 40% of their fundraising campaign goal.  This allowed Tom Regenski, United Way of Pike Vice President, and Craig Ehrhardt, United Way Board Member to add 15% to the United Way Goal Thermometer.  Recently, fundraising efforts, such as the successful Chefs United Benefit Dinner, have helped contribute to this level.

“Reaching our goal is important not only to the United Way, but to the community residents as well. All the monies raised by the United Way go directly back into Pike County Human Services and United Way initiatives. We are very grateful to be able to come one step closer in reaching our goal.” Tom Regenski commented. When we asked Craig Ehrhardt about fundraising events in 2009, He said that the UW of Pike County will be hosting a “Tricky Tray” event on April 18th at Delaware Valley High School. Craig also mentioned that the UW will host their 3rd Annual Golf Tournament on June 22nd at the Woodloch Springs Golf Course. Mark your calendars.

How can you help us raise the mercury level? You can donate by logging onto www.unitedwaypike.org and clicking on “donate”, or call the United Way of Pike County at (570)296-9980 to find out how you can contribute. Any gift to the United Way, large or small, allows the United Way of Pike County to partner with you in helping children and youth succeed, improving access to health care, promoting self-sufficiency, and strengthening families of Pike County. Remember to watch the progress of the United Way goal thermometer.

Pike County Chefs Cook for United Way

Local Chefs and United Way Board Members
Pictured: Chef’s gather with the United Way Board President, Christine Obser (front right), after another successful evening
Pike County dressed up for a night of fine dining while giving back to the community!  November 20th was the 5th annual Chef’s United Dinner hosted by the United Way of Pike County at Erhardt’s Waterfront Restaurant in Hawley. The fare was far from ordinary, with something for every palate, and ending with mouthwatering desserts. In addition, guests were treated to the pleasing music of Ray Weeks while dining. The United Way wishes to express its sincere thanks to the following restaurants who were so generous with their time and thoughtful of their menus: The Boat House, Caesar’s Cove Haven, Crazy Fingers, Ehrhardt’s Waterfront Restaurant, Gresham’s Chop House, Hotel Fauchere, The Inn at Woodloch, Lake Wallenpaupack Cafe & Restaurant, Mugg’s Country Kitchen, The Muir House, The Settlers Inn, The Summit Restaurant & Grill Room, Torte Knox, Waterwheel Café & Bakery, and Woodloch Bakery.

This year, the United Way added a silent auction to the evening’s entertainment.  Many exciting and enticing items, generously donated by local businesses, were on display.  Lucky bidders went home with either a new treasure for themselves or an early start to Christmas giving!

Ultimately, the real purpose of this evening was to raise money for the United Way of Pike County which allocates funds to many of the local non-profit Human Service Agencies. Guests were movingly reminded of this when listening to the two featured guest speakers for the evening. Debbie from Safe Haven and Elena from New Vision Club House spoke of their experiences and the positive changes in their lives as a result of the help they received from these agencies.  “Listening to these fine ladies just made you want to do anything possible to support these wonderful organizations,” one guest was overheard saying.

Every year we say how the agencies are struggling – and this year, the struggle is magnified in the current climate.  “Fundraising is never easy, so to have such support of an event and to raise such significant funds is encouraging and heartening for the United Way,” said Christine Obser, United Way President.  United Way Board Members Tom Regenski and Bob Kiesendahl who co-chaired the event, echoed her sentiments saying, in addition, how gratified they were that so many Chefs in the area gave up an evening to come out and support the United Way. “They love to cook and feel great that their talent can also help a worthy cause,” said Tom Regenski.

United Way of Pike County and Wachovia successfully teamed again to gather coats to deliver to the Bushkill Outreach Program.  This is the sixth year the two organizations have organized this Drive, in conjunction with Kate Newman of Bushkill.  “Every year the program sees an increase in the number of area residents needing additional winter clothing.  This year, with the economic downturn and the early arrival of cold temperatures, the need is even more substantial. We are delighted to support Wachovia in this very important service to our community,” said Christine Obser, President of the United Way, “and our thanks to Valerie Seitz who spearheads the Drive.”

The United Way of Pike County was pleased to be a part of the Chamber of Commerce sponsored Community Awards Dinner, November 14 at the Riverview Inn.  The United Way was happy to have the occasion to present Catherine Boysen from Milford the award for Outstanding Volunteer Service.  Cathy has been volunteering for United Way for eight years, beginning with its first Day of Caring.  Day of Caring is an event that enlists over 300 volunteers in the County to help the non-profits clean up, clean out and prepare for the busy winter months to come. Cathy has played a vital part in the registration and the direction of the day.  In addition, Cathy has worked tirelessly on the United Way Community Expo, another United Way sponsored event, where over 30 community organizations offer information about their services in a fun, family friendly way. Again, Cathy spends many hours helping with the organizing and running of the event.  United Way President, Christine Obser, remarked, “The true success of any non-profit organization really depends on the hard work of its volunteers.  Cathy exemplifies what being a volunteer is all about – time and energy and generosity of spirit. We are so grateful to her!”

Milford is fortunate to have a nationally recognized and heralded company such as Altec Lansing in its environs. Altec Lansing designs and manufactures digital powered audio systems for PCs and portable audio devices. The company enhances all digital systems with superior sound quality for all to enjoy. Since its move to Pike County in 2001, Altec Lansing has been a great supporter of United Way. Each year Altec Lansing has donated generously to the United Way campaign. The company recognizes that by giving to United Way, it is, in reality, donating to more than 20 non-profit agencies who struggle to make ends meet each year. This year Altec Lansing is also donating an Ipod docking station to be raffled at the first signature fundraising event given by the United Way this year - Chefs United. This event will be held November 20th at Erhardts Waterfront Restaurant on Lake Wallenpaupack. "We feel so fortunate to be able to count on Altec Lansing's support each year. Since moving to Pike County, Altec Lansing has been an integral part of the County and a supporter of the community," said Scott Myer, United Way Board Member.

For more information about Altec Lansing, visit its website www.alteclansing.com. For more information about Chefs United, please call the United Way of Pike County at 570-296-9980. To further add to the excitement there will be 50/50 raffle and a Silent Auction! When asked about the evening John Gilpin, Pike County treasurer had this to say, "Perhaps what is best about the Chefs United Benefit Dinner is the knowledge that you are supporting the United Way of Pike County and its efforts to raise money for area human service agencies and organizations. These agencies will then fund area residents in need, and with the current economic situation there will be more people in need of our help." 6th Annual Coat Drive Underway!

Winter arrived early this year! Pike County has already had the first snow storm, so it is wonderful news that the United Way has once again teamed up with Wachovia's Valerie Seitz and Bushkill Outreach's Kate Newman for the Sixth Annual Winter Coat Drive. Winter coats and clothes are going to be collected between October 14th and November 14th. These items will be taken to The Bushkill Outreach center after November 14th to be distributed to Pike County residents who need them.

"We do this coat drive every year because it is something that really helps members of our community. Particularly with the current economic climate, this is a good way to help those who can't afford to buy for themselves. I love doing the coat drive and knowing that it really can make a difference in someone's life," stated Valerie Seitz, Financial Specialist at Wachovia.

Coats can be dropped off at any of these five Wachovia branches: Milford, Dingmans Ferry, Greater Lake Region, Matamoras, and Lords Valley. If you have any questions contact Valerie Seitz at (570)296-5616.

United Way Trick-or-Treats: Was there a Sarah Palin sighting in Milford Borrough?

This Halloween your United Way neighbors came out to trick-or-treat for the cause and share in the fun. The cause for the United Way of Pike County is to identify, develop and fund, a full range of human services that meet critical community needs. This year UWPC received much needed help from wizards, witches, princesses, pirates, super heroes, Thing 1 and 2 to name just a few loyal supporters.

"We wanted to get out and show the community that the United Way of Pike County knows how to raise funds while having fun", said Barbara Tarquinio UWPC Campaign Chair.

"We want to thank all who took time out from their busy haunting schedules to support the United Way of Pike County and the local human service agencies it supports", said Christine Obser UWPC President.

IGA Helps to Raise Funds and Awareness in the Hawley Area

Standing in Front of Isles with a Check are IGA Representatives and United Way of Pike County President
Pictured: Tom Regenski, United Way Board Member and Christine Obser, United Way President, were pleased to receive a check representing the money raised through cashiers' efforts during the month of August from Julie Burke, IGA Cashier and Jim Shook, owner of Hawley IGA.
The Shook family of Hawley is well-known for supporting its community. This past August, they became part of the United Way's efforts to help Pike County. All during the month, cashiers could be heard asking if shoppers would like to make a donation to the United Way. At month's end, a check for $546.00 was presented to Christine Obser, United Way Board President. "We were so pleased to have the IGA and the Shook family facilitate this fundraiser for the United Way which benefits in many ways. Of course it raises money, but it also raises awareness of the United Way. And shoppers can leave knowing they have helped someone else who may just not be able to buy groceries, or even get to the store," said Tom Regenski, United Way Board Member. Tom added that he is "so pleased that the Shook family has agreed to help the United Way again next year. Look for us!"

Pike County Light and Power put the Breakfast Power into Day of Caring

Pictured: Pictured in the PC Light and Power Office are John Gilpin, UWPC Board Member, Christine Obser, UW Board President, Tia Giles, PCL&P Office Manager, Barbara Tarquinio, UW Board Member, and John Gilpin, UW Board Member.
One way the Day of Caring gets off to such a positive start is the hearty breakfast following the sign-in. This year the United Way was thrilled to receive $925.00 from the Pike County Light and Power to help defray the cost. "PCL&P provides electric service to 4,000 customers in eastern Pike County. We are grateful that the PCL&P supports the United Way of Pike County and the Day of Caring. This generous contribution helped get the day off to a great start for all the volunteers and helped set the tone for the day - which was great!" said Scott Myer, United Way Board Member.

PCL&P is a subsidiary of Orange and Rockland Utilities, Inc., located in Pearl River, NY. For more information about Pike County Light and Power, refer to the website oru.com or call 1-877-434-4100. For further about United Way of Pike County, visit the website

Give Where You Live! At Work with United Way

United Way Board Members
Pictured: Barbara Tarquinio, United Way Board Member and Campaign Chairman, and Christine Obser, United Way President, stand with Scott Myer of Myer and Myer, CPA whose family was thanked for generous giving.
Do you live in Pike County but commute outside your community? Do you wonder how you can give back to your hometown while you spend your day far from home?

The United Way of Pike County wants you to know that you can still "Give where you Live" by making your payroll deduction to United Way of Pike County using UW code #40129. It's that simple and UWPC guarantees your generous donation will go where it is needed most in your community.

Unfortunately not all Pike County families can weather this economic downturn. Recent published statistics show that more Pike County residents filed for personal bankruptcy, mortgage defaults are climbing, food pantry requests have increased and local agencies are inundated with requests for emergency services.

It's the mission of The United Way of Pike County to help fund community human service agencies dealing with these challenges. In 2008 UWPC was able to allocate funding to many local agencies, such as Tobacco Free Coalition, ALS, PCDC, Catholic Social Services, Salvation Army, Pike/Wayne Adult Literacy, Habitat for Humanity, American Red Cross, Penn State Cooperative Ext., Safe Haven, Country Ark Farm, Good News Food Pantry, PC Youth Coalition, GAIT, Consolidated Training & Service New Vision Club House, Camp Speer Eljabar YMCA, Honesdale Volunteer Ambulance Corp., CDD, Holy Trinity Food Pantry, Compassionate Friends, and Good Shepherd Child Care.

This year your neighbors need your payroll donation more than ever to continue supporting these community support groups. Most of the regional human service agencies are uniquely local and do not have support from a national organization. The United Way of Pike County funds are even more important in such cases.

UWPC asks you to "Give where you Live" so that your payroll donation goes where it's needed most in your community. When indicating your payroll deduction donation at your place of work, please use United Way code #40129 to re-direct any United Way donation back to Pike County. Scott Myer, United Way Board Member commented that he grew up in Pike County and is pleased, as a business owner, to support the United Way. His wife, Maureen, who commutes outside of the County, also contributes to the Pike County United Way. Scott said, "my wife feels very strongly about giving where she lives, even though her workplace is outside the County."

We all win when communities stay connected ensuring our families are financially stable and our people are healthy. Please invest in your community by donating your payroll deduction to the UWPC and "Give where you Live!" in 2008.

If you are interested in making a payroll deduction donation to United Way of Pike County, please reference commuter donation and use the code UW ID #40129. Other Pledge Codes for the Pike United Way: PA State Employee Campaign (SECA) 4314, Combined Federal Campaign PA (CFC PA) 3436 and Combined Federal Campaign NY (CFC NY).

Volunteers Put the Care in the Day of Caring

Delaware Valley Cheerleaders and UWPC Representatives
Pictured: United Way Day of Co-Chair Mike Donlon on the left and United Way Board President, Christine Obser, and Joe Casmus, Delaware Valley High School Principal on the right, with the Delaware Valley High School cheerleaders, who cheered and washed cars all day for the Day of Caring.
Pike County received its annual Fall cleaning when the United Way held its eighth annual Day of Caring, Saturday, September 20th with a record 350 volunteers. Volunteer groups raked leaves, painted fences, worked on computer data bases, cleaned stalls, cleared out dead trees, recycled, cleaned closets, and painted walls, to name a few activities! Delaware Valley High School cheerleaders even washed cars to help the United Way raise funds and awareness. Day of Caring is a special day in Pike County. Judging from the smiles on everyone's face, it's hard to tell who benefits the most - the agency or the volunteer. The United Way also partnered with the American Red Cross to host the 9/11 Memorial Blood Drive. "Our goal was to collect 91 pints of blood and I am happy to say that we surpassed that goal and collected 110 pints," said Christine Obser, United Way Board President. "I am proud of how our community stepped forward to participate and meet this challenge. Every person made a difference because every pint saves 3 lives," commented Scott Weiland, United Way Board Member and Co-Chair for the 9/11 Memorial Blood Drive.

Day of Caring Co-Chairmen Mike Donlon and Sue Robbins, and Catherine Capasso, United Way Program Director, give special thanks to all the volunteers, especially the 300 Delaware Valley High School students, to the Dime Bank for providing the tee shirts for the volunteers, to the Pike County Light and Power Company and Robert Kiesendahl from Woodloch Pines for paying for the breakfast offered the volunteers, and to the Delaware Valley High School and its Principal, Joe Casmus, for opening the school for the day, including holding the Blood Drive. Catherine Capasso, noted that, "Joe Casmus worked tirelessly on scheduling for the day and, in particular, arranging the transportation for every student who needed it. He wanted to be sure that any student wanting to participate could do so. Thank you, Joe Casmus and the Delaware Valley students, coaches and faculty - we couldn't have done it without you!" Mike Donlan said, "The Day of Caring involves a lot of work on the part of everyone involved and yet, at the end of the day, you just feel incredibly energized by the spirit of the Day; it's a wonderful experience to be a part of."

The United Way of Pike County is getting a "boost", literally, from MC Tree Care of Hawley. Michael Cortright, owner, has given the United Way a lift in his bucket truck to raise the Pike County United Way banner and its hopes of raising money to help area residents. Mike states that he recently attended one of the UW fundraising events and was very impressed to learn that the United Way funds so many local human service agencies and these agencies help people in crisis and in need. "The United Way of Pike County is a great organization and I am happy to help out!" The United Way is thrilled to have its banner displayed so prominently at Wallenpaupack Area High School and hopes this banner draws more attention to the United Way and its efforts to help provide for Pike County citizens in need. United Way says a big "Thank you!" to Mike!

United Way Kicks Off 2008-2009 Campaign

Pictured: Celebrating the start of this year's United Way Campaign are Barbara Buchanan, Honorary Campaign Chair, Barbara Tarquinio, Campaign Chair, and Christine Obser, President of UWPC.
Despite the early morning rain, The United Way of Pike County held its 2008-2009 Campaign Kickoff Breakfast on September 9th at the Hotel Fauchere to thank its past sponsors and encourage support for this year's campaign. Pastor Niels Nielsen from Trinity Church gave the blessing and noted that food pantry requests have increased over 30% in the area and how grateful they are for United Way donations. United Way President Christine Obser reported that since its establishment in 1999, the United Way of Pike County has raised $685,000 for local human service agencies right here in Pike County.

United Way Campaign Chair Barbara Tarquinio announced this year's campaign goal of $150,000. She stressed re-thinking what's possible, as small donations from many combined with larger donations from signature sponsors, enables us to "Live United" and invest in a healthy community. "In this unpredictable economy we can be the source of stability for so many overwhelmed by their circumstance", said Tarquinio.

The group heard testimonials from benefactors of UW supported local Human Service agencies. Kim Spry spoke about PCDC giving her the skills to improve her life and successfully live on her own. Stephanie Woegens told how Habitat for Humanity gave her family the security, pride and happiness in owning a home.

Awards were given to significant United Way donors recognizing the impact of their contribution to last year's campaign. They included Altec Lansing, Biondo Investment Advisors, Amy & Bob Litzenberger, Litzenberger Family Foundation, Bob Kiesendahl of Woodloch Pines Resort, Scott Myer of Myer & Myer CPA, Ronald and Randall Schmalzle of Ski Big Bear, Frank Tarquinio, and The Dime Bank.

There were also some surprises. "The United Way of Pike County is most grateful to Felix Rivera of Biondo Investment Advisors and Bob Kiesendahl of Woodloch Pines Resort who each pledged $5,000 dollars on behalf of their organization, to this year's campaign" said Scott Weiland UW Campaign Board Member.

Honorary Chair Barbara Buchanan and Founder Alan Dolge reminded the group of United Way of Pike County's history and stressed that the funding it provides and its volunteer spirit are critical to sustaining human service agencies in our community.

The United Way of Pike County Board of Directors sincerely thanks the Hotel Fauchere management and staff for hosting and sponsoring this wonderful event and asks the community for its continued support in 2008-2009.

Pike United Way Steps Up to Support Study of Community Needs in Pike and Wayne Counties

United Way, Wayne Memorial and Community Needs Assessment Committee Representatives
During the presentation are, sitting: UWPC Board Members — Barbara Tarquinio, Mike Donlan, Celeste O'Neil and Scott Weiland. Standing: Bob Venziale, UWPC Board member; Jack Dennis, representing WMH; Lee Oakes, Pike/ Wayne Community Needs Assessment Steering Committee Chair; Christine Obser, UWPC Board president; and David Deckinger, UWPC Board member.
Final Report Issued December 2008

“Once again, Pike United Way is in the middle of the action, helping to improve delivery of health and human services in our area,” said Christine Obser, United Way Board president, as she handed a check for $2,500 to Lee Oakes, chair of the Steering Committee for the Pike Wayne Counties Health and Human Services Needs Assessment.

“United Way has joined with principal funders, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and Wayne Memorial Hospital, and with others including Pike and Wayne County Governments, PPL, and Pike County Interagency Council in developing a landmark study that will enable Pike and Wayne County governing bodies and community organizations to establish policy priorities that will guide the delivery of health care and human services to the populations of each county with maximum effectiveness and efficiency.”

“We at United Way could not have funded such an ambitious project covering all of Pike County ourselves, so partnering with others enabled us to help initiate a ground-breaking Study that will serve both Counties for years to come. We are proud to have been one of the initiators of this project. We will use the results to strengthen the fund allocations process to local organizations, and to help identify new needs.”

Steering Committee members, Jack Dennis, manager of Grants and Development at lead funder Wayne Memorial Hospital and Lee Oakes, Hospital Board vice-chair, agreed that, “By the time this historic Study is completed late this year, statistics and other information will have been gathered from every available source. More than 200 citizens from every walk of life, including health and human services providers, professionals, and users will have contributed their thoughts and expertise in focus groups and interviews. It will include in-depth analysis of many local areas never penetrated before, and will be able to be read, separately or jointly by both Counties.”

David Hoff, CEO of Wayne Memorial Hospital, said, “The Study will be an important tool in soliciting federal and state funding for projects for newly defined critical health and human services needs, as well as funding many of the traditional services that have always been important to the care of our patients, and those of other local and regional hospitals as well.”

The Study will be available for public use on line, at the United Way website,
www.PikePaHelp.org, and other websites, in every government office, at non-profit organizations and in libraries and other public places throughout both counties by early in 2009.

This is your chance to save a life! The Blood Drive, part of the United Way Day of Caring, is to be held at the Delaware Valley Middle School Gymnasium from 9 am to 3 pm. Thanks to the efforts of Superintendent Finan of the Delaware Valley School District and Joe Casmus, Delaware Valley High School Principal, the Blood Drive will again be held in spacious surroundings where chances are you will run into your friends who are also lining up to give. Golfers Play for Fun to Support United Way

Pictured: Scott Myer, Matt Kiesendahl, Christine Obser, John Gilpin, Tom Regenski are all smiles at the United Way Golf Tournament Dinner.
A little rain, even drenching showers, could not dampen the high spirits at the United Way Golf Tournament held at Woodloch Springs Golf and Country Club, Monday, June 16th. Players of all levels came to challenge Woodloch's picturesque and daunting course while supporting a fundraiser which improves the lives of Pike County citizens through the United Way.

The Golfers had a chance to win one of three hole in one prizes - a tractor provided by Tractor John and Krempasky Equipment, a Harley Davidson Motorcycle provided by Baer's Sport Center, or a Bass Fishing Boat provided by Seaman's Marine. One player came within 6 inches of leaving with the tractor! Cocktails, dinner and a drawing for generously donated raffle prizes, completed a day of high spirits and good fun.

But this day was really all about support for the United Way which funds so many of Pike County's human service agencies. Local agencies that were represented at the dinner that evening, explained how the United Way contributes to their efforts at offering hope. Some stories were personal testimonies on benefiting from the services offered at Safe Haven. Martha Dubensky, executive director for G.A.I.T., spoke about the successes of the Therapeutic Riding Center to individuals in need of physical or emotional therapy. "Their stories eloquently reminded us all of the importance of supporting United Way in any way we can. Through our funding, we have such a direct impact on individuals who are in desperate need of help. This was such a shining example of how individual lives can be positively changed because the community cares," said UWPC President Christine Obser.

The United Way thanks all who supported and participated in their 2nd annual Golf Tournament, especially the Woodloch Springs Country Club for hosting this event. Save the date - June 22, 2009 - for a rematch next year!

The United Way of Pike County announces the close of its 2007-2008 campaign on June 30, 2008. Thanks to the generous donations of many loyal contributors in the Pike County community, the campaign is expected to achieve 75 % of its fund raising goal to be used by local human service agencies improving the lives of Pike County citizens. "We are so appreciative and touched by the generous outpouring of support from this community especially during a year of serious economic challenges," said Christine Obser UW President.

Several local businesses provided the momentum behind this year's campaign initiatives. The Chefs United Banquet raised close to $12,000 for the United Way of Pike County and offered delicious dishes from 19 area restaurants. Banner Day events, hosted at several local restaurants were a great way to enjoy a night out with friends while a portion of the proceeds were donated to United Way. Ski Big Bear gave families days of fun on the slopes with a percentage of the proceeds going to the campaign. "Pennies for Pasta" was cooked up by Wallenpaupack Area Middle school students and donated to UWPC. The United Way 2nd Annual Golf Tournament at Woodloch Springs swung into action raising much needed money for UWPC funded agencies.

"Generosity comes from all walks of life and when 'united in effort' it ensures our entire community's well-being. We thank all our United Way contributors," said Barbara Tarquinio, UW Board Member.

"We especially thank our corporate and employee payroll sponsorships who 'Give where you Live' through payroll deductions to the United Way of Pike County and for the confidence you place in our ability to spend your contribution where it truly makes a difference in your community," said Scott Myer UWPC Board Member.

This year individual local business contributors provided the motivation and inspiration through their generous donation and participation in the UWPC campaign.

"These community-aware business groups and leaders inspire us with their dedication and commitment to investing in our future and we thank them for their loyal support," said John Gilpin UWPC Board Member.

Individual donations from loyal supporters continue to bolster this year's campaign . "All contributions, large and small, are essential to creating lasting solutions to critical local concerns. The mission of United Way of Pike County is to focus on what matters in our community and Live United! while building futures. We are eternally grateful to these outstanding individual contributors who trust UWPC to make this happen," said Tom Regenski UWPC VP.

The United Way Day of Caring began this 2007-2008 campaign with over 280 volunteers donating their day to local human service agencies supported by UWPC. "Volunteers are the heart and soul supporting the success of UWPC campaigns. They exemplify the United Way mission to improve the lives of others and we thank the business and individual volunteers for their selfless dedication," said Sue Robbins, UWPC Board Member.

Please note: There is still time to donate and help United Way of PC meet 100% of its 2007-2008 goal. The United Way of Pike County Board of Directors asks that you please accept our heartfelt thank you for all you have done for so many people in our community. Your consistent support has changed lives.

Learning and Fun at the United Way Expo

Beneath sunny skies and light breezy winds, The United Way held the sixth Annual Community Expo at Camp Speers-Eljabar in Dingmans Ferry. Over 30 human service agencies set up tables, each with games and goodies for all the families in attendance. The sense of fun and excitement carried the day while at the same time everyone learned a bit more about the many organizations in Pike County which are there to help enrich everyone's lives. In addition to the activities being offered by the agencies, there was entertainment by the Dingman-Delaware Elementary School Choir and step dancers representing the Sheahan-Gormley School of Irish Dance in Milford, as well as pony rides provided Camp Speers-Eljabar . Thanks to the generosity of Pike County Alliance for Prevention, young and old enjoyed hearing Bill Streeter of The Raptor Center tell about the birds of prey while holding a peregrine falcon, a red-tailed hawk, an owl, and an eagle for all to see - what a special and rare opportunity for the Expo visitors. UWPC Board Member, Bob Veneziale, skillfully manned the megaphone in order to direct all the participants to the many activities.

UWPC especially thanks Camp Speers-Eljabar and Camp Director and UWPC Board Member Ravenell Williams for hosting this event. The beautiful camp setting certainly added to the enjoyment. UWPC Board Member and Expo Chair, Sue Robbins, said, "We are so pleased to once again hold the Expo here. This is one event that should go on every family's calendar. Never can you learn so much, see so much, and enjoy yourself so much, than at this free afternoon put on by United Way. I would especially like to thank Catherine Capasso, Christine Obser, Catherine Boysen, Dana Wojciechowski, and Jill Gamboni for all their time and energy. "

The United Way of Pike County thanks Ski Big Bear and its owners, Ron Schmalzle and Randy Schmalzle, for generously hosting a fundraiser and food drive on the weekends of March 7-9 and 15-16. Originally the event was planned for only one weekend but was extended because of the great reception from the community. A portion of the proceeds from all ticket sales went to the United Way of Pike County and people also donated nonperishable food items for local food banks. Local residents, weekenders and tourists came out on both weekends to have a lot of fun and show their support for the United Way. Everyone enjoyed all the activities Ski Big Bear has to offer including skiing, snowboarding, tubing, and both private and group lessons. There was fun for all ages both on the slopes and in the lodge, where people ate, played arcade games and relaxed.

"It's imperative to have support from local businesses like Ski Big Bear and those that come out to our events. We really appreciate the turnout and especially thank Ron and Randy Schmalzle for their dedication to the community and continued support," said UWPC Board Member Bob Veneziale. UWPC Board Member Tom Regenski added that "It is families like the Schmalzles who allow the United Way to carry out its mission to fund Human Service agencies here in Pike County." Owner Ron Schmalzle said that "The United Way is a great organization that we have been involved with for many years. As local business owners, we are aware of the importance of giving back to the community and helping our neighbors. I am glad that we are lucky to be in a position to help and I would encourage more people to get involved."

About their experience as a UWPC sponsor, Wade remarked, "It is exciting to participate in a United Way of Pike County event, and we have enjoyed having this opportunity to help the UWPC raise funds for local community agencies."

"We are very lucky to be able to offer a great collection of fantastic hole-in-1 prizes. This would not have been possible without the generosity of all our hole-in-1 sponsors, including Seaman's Marine. We are so grateful for the support and enthusiasm we have received about this project from Wade Seaman and Mark Hardler," commented UWPC Board Member Bob Kiesendahl.

The tournament fundraiser will start at 11:30 am and will include golfing, lunch, a putting contest, hole-in-1 contests, a tee-off, 50/50 raffle and basket raffle, cocktail hour, and an awards dinner. In addition to participating as a golfer, there are several sponsorship levels available for interested individuals and organizations. United Way Goal Thermometer Has Moved!

Board Members Point to the 53o Temp on the Thermometer in front of Rite Aid in Milford
Pictured: UWPC Board Members John Gilpin and Mike Donlon.
Thanks to the continued generosity of the community, the United Way of Pike County Goal Thermometer has moved - in more ways than one! John Gilpin and Mike Donlon, UWPC Board Members, added 13% to the thermometer, so it now reflects that the UWPC is at 53% of their 2007-2008 campaign fundraising goal. They also moved the thermometer from the United Way headquarters to the Rite Aid parking lot at the corner of Broad & Harford Streets in the Milford Borough. Remember to look for it and watch the progress!

Recently, fundraising efforts such as the successful Banner Day events have helped contribute to this level. The next Banner Day will be held at the Bar Louis in the Hotel Fauchere during lunch and dinner on Thursday, April 10, 2008.

"In these tough economic times, local human service agencies are seeing a large increase in demand for services. The United Way is very lucky to be able to count on the community's generosity so we can contribute funds to these agencies," said John Gilpin. "The United Way would like to thank the community for their continued support and the Rite Aid for allowing us to place our thermometer in such a prominent place in their parking lot," added Mike Donlon.

More than ever given recent economic events, the UWPC continues to focus on its mission to help fund a variety of local human service agencies which directly affect the well-being of Pike County citizens. How can you help us raise the mercury level? You can donate by logging onto
www.unitedwaypike.org and clicking on "donate", or call the United Way of Pike County at (570)296-9980. Give where you Live! with United Way

United Way of Pike in Center with Funded Agencies Listed Around it.
It's the same news as the rest of America; Pike County residents are experiencing the effects of a slowed-down, wobbly economy. Unfortunately, not all Pike County families can weather this economic downturn. Recent published statistics show that last year Pike County residents filed for personal bankruptcy at a much higher rate than the year before. The bankruptcy rate climbed from 69 filings in 2006 to 135 filings in 2007, realizing almost a 100% increase from 2006 to 2007.

It's the mission of The United Way of Pike County to help fund human services in the community dealing with these challenges. In 2007 UWPC was able to allocate $105,000 to fund many local agencies, such as the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church Food Pantry, the Pike Chapter of Habitat for Humanity, Pike County Development Center, Catholic Social Services, Pike Adult Literacy, American Red Cross, Penn State Cooperative Ext., Country Ark Farm, PC Alliance, Camp Speer Eljabar YMCA, Tobacco Free Coalition, Devereux Pocono Center, Country Ark Farm, PEEC, New Vision Club House, the Honesdale Volunteer Ambulance Corps., GAIT, CDD, Safe Haven and Salvation Army.

This year is a different story. The UWPC fundraising campaign has seen a decrease in donations, but calls for help are greatly increasing. UWPC is issuing an urgent plea to Pike County citizens and businesses to help with requests for aid flooding their community human service agencies. As an example, Linda La Starza, Executive Director of Safe Haven, stated that "Safe Haven of Pike County has seen an increase in the request for emergency crisis services. The emergency shelter has not seen an empty day in over 8 months. United Way funding is most crucial to sustaining these services to victims of violence in our community."
UWPC asks you to "Give where you Live" so that your donation goes where it is needed most in your community. Most of the regional human service agencies are uniquely local and do not have support from a national organization. The United Way of Pike County funds are even more important in such cases.

While recession talks continue and gas prices approach $4 per gallon, please partner with UWPC to ensure the well-being of the Pike County community. Any contribution, large or small, allows United Way of Pike County to enable your improving access to food, shelter and health care, promoting self-sufficiency, and strengthening the families of Pike County. We really need your help!

Please invest in your community by donating to the UWPC and "Give where you Live!" in 2008. If you are interested in making a donation, you can log onto
www.unitedwaypike.org and click "Donations" to make an online contribution, or you can call the United Way office at (570)-296-9980. Wallenpaupack Area Middle School Helps United Way Efforts with Pennies for Pasta!

Thanks to the generosity of donors from every walk of life, The United Way of Pike County is able to raise money to allocate to local human service agencies in Pike County. One of the generous donations that the United Way recently received was from the Wallenpaupack Area Middle School.

Every year the 6th, 7th and 8th grade students participate in the Pennies for Pasta fundraiser by bringing in loose change to their homerooms. The money is collected, and the homeroom that raises the most wins a trip to the Olive Garden. The money is then donated to the United Way of Pike County. This year a total of $1,500.00 was raised, and Mr. Capone's 6th grade homeroom won. Mr. Capone's class said, "We were looking forward to the prize of going to lunch, but it felt great to raise money for the United Way."

"We are very grateful for the Wallenpaupack Area Middle School's generous donation. The students should be very proud of their accomplishment of raising so much for their community," commented Tom Regenski, United Way Board Member.

The United Way would like to extend their thanks to the Wallenpaupack Area Middle School, Principal Szader, Mr. Capone, and all the students for their efforts in raising and donating these monies.

Craig and Eric Ehrhardt of Ehrhardt's Waterfront Restaurant in Hawley generously hosted the March 17th Banner Day and have donated a portion of the proceeds from the day's lunch and dinner to the United Way of Pike County to help support local human service organizations. "Members of our community need assistance in this struggling economy. We are happy to help the United Way support local agencies that are providing the much needed aid", said Craig.

The United Way of Pike County is grateful to Craig and Eric Ehrhardt and the Ehrhardt's Waterfront Restaurant staff for their community support! Please look for the United Way banner at the Bar Louis in the Milford Borough on April 10th and join us for another great meal raising money for our community.

Last year the funds raised supported food banks, housing, material assistance programs, programs for the mentally and emotionally special-abled community, to name just a few critical services. The money donated to the United Way of Pike County is used to fund many human service agencies right here in Pike County.

The United Way of Pike County Newly Decorated!

Pictured: Louis C. Baker of Fabric Creations in Hawley, PA 226-3334, WAMS students Natasha Neary, Cassie Marro, Elizabeth Roy, UWPC President Christine Obser, WAMS Principal Diane Szader.
Three students from the Wallenpaupack Area Middle School Volunteer Club recently traveled to the new Pike County United Way office to hang decorative swags on bare white walls.

A local craftsman, Mr. Louis C. Baker, volunteered his time and expertise to create the swags. Mr. Baker spent 31 years working in the garment industry in New York City. During that time he opened a part-time business, Fabric Creations, reupholstering furniture, making fitted slip covers, draperies, and cushions. This eventually transitioned into full-time work. For the past year he has been residing in Hawley, PA, where he continues to make custom drapery, fitted slip covers, and cushions.

On February 7, 2008 Mr. Baker visited the middle school to talk to volunteer club students about careers in his field. He talked about the importance of education, particularly focusing on the mathematical skills needed to create decorative items. After he spoke, students pinned swags he brought in preparation for Mr. Baker's final stitching.

Once the swags were ready, on February 29, 2008 Natasha Neary, Cassie Marro, and Elizabeth Roy, all 8th graders at WAMS accompanied their advisors, Mrs. Mariruth Borden and Mrs. Susan Pethick, to Milford to assist in the hanging of the swags.

WAMS Principal, Miss Diane Szader, and Christine Obser, United Way President, met students at the office and talked to them about the many organizations serviced by the United Way. After it was over, Natasha commented, "Overall, this was a great experience to be a part of." The WAMS Volunteer Club dedicates many hours to charities such as Meals on Wheels, The American Cancer Society, and The United Way.

Zach Kiesendahl, age 8, really enjoyed his recent outing at Ski Big Bear with his dad, remarking, "I'm having a great time! The snow is awesome and I am glad we came out to ski today."

There are even more reasons to come out to Ski Big Bear this weekend - they will be hosting a special United Way community food drive and fundraiser on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, March 7th, 8th, and 9th. They are generously donating a portion of every ticket sold to the United Way of Pike County and will be collecting non-perishable food for local food banks. United Way of Pike County Welcomes Alex Meloi and Diane Szader to the Board of Directors

Standing with Smiles are Board Members Alex Meloi and Diane Szader.
Pictured: (from left): UWPC Board Members Alex Meloi and Diane Szader.
Pike Country United Way works to bring people and communities together. The same holds true for Pike United Way's Board Members! New Pike County United Way Board members Diane Szader and Alex Meloi attended Port Jervis Middle School together in the early 1980's. After graduation, both left the Tri-State area to pursue education and careers. This summer, their graduating class held a 20th reunion and a friendship was renewed, with the United Way becoming a shared commitment.

Alex Meloi has been a United Way of Pike County Board Member since November of 2007. Alex grew up just across the river in Montague NJ and graduated from Pope John High School in Sparta NJ. He majored in Fashion Design at Marist College and moved to New York City after graduation to pursue a career on 7th Avenue. In his 14 years in the garment center he designed and manufactured women's clothing for such names as Ellen Tracy, Dana Buchman, Laundry, Sag Harbor, and JH Collectibles. In 2007 Alex left the garment center and moved back to the Tri-state area to get back to his roots. Alex and his brother Andrew Meloi decided to expand the family liquor store into an upscale wine and spirits shop which capitalized on his passion for gourmet food. Alex also works with his family as a Pennsylvania and New York State Realtor at ERA Meloi Realty's Milford location. In his spare time you can usually find him whitewater kayaking somewhere near Shohola. Meloi says, "What I enjoy the most about being in Pike County is the lush countryside, friendly charm, and rich history." Meloi brings to the board a fresh spirit and strong sense of creativity. Meloi joined the board because, "The most worthwhile thing anyone can do in their life is to build something. I am honored to be part of United Way's efforts in building a stronger community through their hard work, dedication, and connection to local needs."

Diane Szader has been a United Way of Pike County Board Member since September of 2007. After graduating from Port Jervis High School in 1987, she left the Tri-State area to attend Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania as a business major. She obtained management and marketing positions in the rental car industry, working in Philadelphia and Wilkes Barre, focusing marketing and advertising. Szader decided to go back to school to obtain her Master's Degree in Business Education, and taught marketing, law, and web page design at the high school and middle school level in the Pleasant Valley School District. In 2002, she moved into administration within the district. However, Pike County was still her true home. She returned to the area in 2005, obtaining an Assistant Principal position at Wallenpaupack Area Middle School. Now residing in Milford, Szader has become Wallenpaupack's Middle School Principal. She is working toward her Doctorate in Education at Wilkes University and is thrilled to finally be home. Szader joined the United Way to give back to the community in any way possible. Szader says, "I have worked with the United Way throughout my career, and am excited to support United Way's efforts through the school and as a Board Member. To be able to serve in Pike County makes it doubly exciting. It's my home!"

Bob met that challenge with passion, determination and the commitment to become a survivor. In the ten years since Bob's diagnosis, he has become a passionate advocate along with his mother Joan, for cancer organizations including the Lance Armstrong Foundation, the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and the Penn State Hershey Medical Center. So please come out and support our community with a day of fine food and fun!" stated Tom Regenski, United Way of Pike County Campaign Committee Co-Chair. More than ever given recent economic events, Pike County United Way continues to focus on improving the lives of others in our community. The mission of the United Way of Pike County is to help fund a variety of local human service agencies which directly affect the well being of Pike County citizens.

Thanks to the continued generosity of our community, the United Way of Pike County is currently at 40% of their fundraising campaign goal. This allowed Christine Obser, United Way Pike President, to add 10% to the United Way Goal Thermometer. Recently, fundraising efforts, such as the successful Banner Day dinner events, have helped contribute to this level.

"Reaching our goal is important not only to the United Way, but to the community residents as well. All the monies raised by the United Way go directly back into Pike County Human Services and United Way initiatives. We are very grateful to be able to come one step closer." Christine commented.

How can you help us raise the mercury level? You can donate by logging onto
www.unitedwaypike.org and clicking on "donate", or call the United Way of Pike County at (570)296-9980 to find out how you can contribute. All of Santa's Helpers Work Together
